Bill Hickman
Blending alt-country and roots music influences with lyrical intensity.
I first met Bill when I was moving out of my place in Brooklyn, Wellington. I was literally just about to jump into my car and leave the place for the last time when a chap with long hair, tattoos, a guitar over his back and a beer in hand strolled up to me and said “gidday mate you wouldn’t happen to be a drummer would you?”. The rest as they say is history. I went and checked out one of Bill’s solo shows, was blown away by his voice and ended up playing in the rather infamous rock covers band King Lazy’, before joining Bill’s band to play original alt country music.
For those who are meeting Bill for the first time, if the smokier, darker edge of alt-country is where you like to dwell, if the likes of Steve Earle, Michael Stipe, Bruce Springsteen or Elvis Costello feature heavily on your favourite playlist then it’s time to check out Bill Hickman.
I recorded the drums for “Crossbones” along with a bunch of other amazing Wellington musicians in early 2019. Quite a unique experience as there is no hi hat on the entire album. A legacy left by previous drummer, the very talented Hamish Graham.
We went into the studio again in March 2021 to record the drums and bass for the next record so watch this space!
